    James R. Halpert, Ph.D.

    Dean and Professor, School of Pharmacy, University of Connecticut

     Biography

    Dr. Halpert earned his Ph.D. in biochemistry from Uppsala University, Sweden, his M.S. in Toxicology from the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden, and his B.A. in Scandinavian Languages from the University of California at Los Angeles. He is the eighth dean of the University of Connecticut School of Pharmacy. Previously, he served as professor and associate dean for scientific affairs at the University of California San Diego’s Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. Prior to joining UCSD, Dr. Halpert was professor and chair of the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB), where he also served as director of the Center in Environmental Toxicology. Prior to UTMB Dr. Halpert served for fifteen years on the faculty at the University of Arizona, College of Pharmacy. In addition to university leadership Dr. Halpert served as editor of Drug Metabolism and Disposition, president and secretary-treasurer of The American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics (ASPET), chair of the NIH Pharmacology Study Section, and Treasurer of the International Society for the Study of Xenobiotics. His research for the past 35 years has focused on the structure and function of cytochromes P450 of the 2B and 3A subfamilies. He is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and recipient of the Bernard B. Brodie Award from ASPET and an Award in Excellence from the PhRMA Foundation. Dr. Halpert has published 204 peer-reviewed articles and has obtained grants of ~20M in direct costs.
